SKR 746 : STUDENT CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS ON SPEAKING ENGLISH
In our daily lives, communication is very important, especially oral communication using English. Because English is a foreign language for students in Indonesia, of course in its application there will be many challenges. This research aims to interpret the research analysis: (1) To find students' challenges in speaking English. (2) To find out teachers' solutions to students' difficulties in speaking English. This research used the mixed method approach as the research design (descriptive quantitative to find challenges and qualitative to find solutions).
The instrument used is a questionnaire that must be filled out by students to find out the challenges students face in speaking English and is supported by observations during the learning process. Researchers also used interview instruments to find solutions to students' speaking challenges in English. Researchers conducted interviews with English teachers. This research was conducted on a sample of 70 students consisting of 35 students in class XII IPS 1 and 35 students in class XII IPS 2 at SMAN 4 Kediri.
After analyzing the findings, the results of this research are: (1) The most variable caused students’ challenges in speaking English are mother tongue (71,3%), then it was followed by student habit (68%), vocabulary (59%), and confident (54,4%). (2) The teacher solutions that can be implemented are teachers utilized various methods including implicit dictation, translation, peer guidance, group discussion, pair dialogue, and digital games to tackle students' challenges in speaking English. Emphasizing activities such as role-playing, debates, watching English videos, and giving oral presentations, giving motivation was fostered through stories of successful English speakers, and a point system was implemented to encourage participation and improve grades.
